How to Maintain Your Ceiling Lift

A ceiling lift is an invaluable tool for accomplishing safe patient transfers. Lifts are better for both patients and caregivers. Patients are more comfortable and more secure while being transferred using a lift, and lifts protect caregivers from injuring themselves while straining to lift and move the patient. Ceiling lifts can be installed in homes or care facilities to make transfers easier and safer.

Proper maintenance is essential for keeping a ceiling lift operating in peak condition. Owners should always rely on the instruction manual for specific instructions, but the following are general guidelines for ceiling lift maintenance:

Daily Checklist

Safety is the number one priority. To that end, users should make a habit of doing the following daily:

  • Check the battery. When not in use, the battery should be charging, so it’s fully charged and ready to go when needed. If a visual inspection of the battery reveals any signs of damage, the battery should not be used. Replace damaged batteries immediately.
  • Inspect the lift mechanism. If anything is missing or damaged, don’t use the lift.
  • Inspect the straps and the sling. If the fabric looks worn, there are visible tears, or you see signs of loose stitching, do not use the lift.
  • Inspect the track to make sure there are no visible signs of damage and no obstructions present that would interfere with the movement of the lift.
  • Test the unit. Before involving the patient, operate the controls to make sure the unit is in working order.

Cleaning

The lift’s body can be wiped down daily or as often as needed with a soft, lint-free dampened cloth. If necessary, a mild detergent can be used, but solvents or harsh cleaners should never be used as these could damage the finish. The inside of the track can also be wiped down periodically to ensure that dirt, dust, or grime don’t build up and prevent the unit from moving along the track smoothly.

The sling and straps should be washed according to the instructions on the items themselves or the owner’s manual.

Should the lift or its components become soiled, it should be thoroughly disinfected according to your facility’s protocols. The lift and sling should always be cleaned in between patients. If you are using the lift at home, follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning and disinfecting.

It’s important to follow the instructions in the manual, as these will tell you what products are safe to use, which order to clean the system components, and what parts should not be wiped down.

Battery

Your lift system operates using power from a rechargeable battery. Your manual will specify the battery’s useful life, but your actual results will depend on usage. The following will decrease the life of your battery:

  • Transferring heavy loads. The heavier the patient, the fewer transfers you will be able to do on one charge.
  • Draining the battery. The deeper the battery is drained between charges, the shorter the battery’s lifespan. For example, if you use 30% of the battery between each charge, the battery will fully charge 1000+ times. If you drain the battery to 0 in between charges, the battery will fully charge only 300 times.
  • Storing the battery in extreme cold temperatures. Cold temps decrease the life of a battery.

To prolong the life of your ceiling lift’s battery, always stay within the weight restrictions for the unit, keep the unit fully charged between uses, don’t drain the battery, and store your unit indoors where it won’t get too cold.

Sling

To keep your sling strong, intact, and clean, make sure to care for it properly. Store it away from sunlight in a cool, dry place. Keep it away from corrosive chemicals and sharp objects that can damage the integrity of the fibers. Follow washing instructions carefully and never use if there are signs of abrasion, broken stitches, holes, or other wear.
